Overview
In 2022, I designed the EV Charging Finder app to address the growing need for a reliable, accessible solution for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. My goal was to create an intuitive experience that would enable users to locate nearby charging stations with real-time availability updates, filter by preferences, and easily navigate to the station of their choice. This project focused on reducing common frustrations in finding available EV chargers, thereby enhancing the overall EV charging experience.
Identifying Key Challenges
To better understand user pain points, I examined current market tools and conducted user interviews, identifying both industry-wide and platform-specific challenges.
Industry Challenges: Many EV drivers struggle with outdated or limited information on charger availability, often resulting in frustration when reaching fully occupied stations. Additionally, users expressed a need for more tailored navigation and station-type filtering to avoid unnecessary detours and save time.
Platform Challenges: Users found the existing interfaces for charging apps too cluttered, lacking real-time updates, and often not user-friendly for on-the-go access. The absence of a notification system for open stations meant users had to continually check the app, leading to a suboptimal user experience.
Crafting the Solution
The solution included designing an interactive map interface that displayed nearby EV charging stations, along with real-time availability indicators and key details like station type, connector types, and charging speeds. The final design allowed users to filter by preferences (e.g., fast-charging stations), view estimated wait times, and receive turn-by-turn directions. A notification feature was also added to alert users when a preferred station became available, reducing the time spent checking station status and providing a smoother, frustration-free experience.
